Preface
The COMESA Competition Commission (CCC) organised a Competition and consumer workshop to
develop the investigative capabilities of competition authorities of member states. The workshop
was held from 16 th to 20 th July, 2023, in Lusaka, Zambia. Mr. Jean-Philip Esparon, Ms. Dolores Barrak
and Mr. Curtis Naiken (Analysts, Fair Trading Commission) was nominated to attend the workshop.
The workshop saw participants from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe,
Eswatini, Rwanda, Comoros, Mauritius, Sudan, Malawi, Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia and Seychelles. The
speakers and facilitators of the workshop were from the CCC, US FTC, European Commission and the
Competition authority of Kenya.
The workshop focused on the economic theories on the effects of vertical mergers, analytical skills,
and vertical restrains. Participants were instructed on how to develop an appropriate theory of
harm, planning of investigation, gathering and utilising information along with group discussion
sessions based on hypothetical cases.
